오늘 포스팅할 곡은 많은 분들에게 화학형제라고 불리며 인기를 끌고 있는 그들 Chemical Brothers의 Go이다. 가장 최근 앨범 Born in the Echoes(2015)의 타이틀곡이기도 한데 피쳐링에 참여한 Q-tip의 약간은 간사한(?) 목소리(큐팁 팬들에겐 미안하다)가 케미컬 브라더스 특유의 중저음의 빠름템포와 만나 엄청난 간지를 뿜어내고 있다. 여기서 잠깐 말하고 갈것이 있는데 필자는 간지라는 말을 사용하고 싶진 않지만 이거보다 더 느낌을 잘표현할 방법이 없어서 부득이하게 계속 사용하고 있다. 읽기에 불편하신 분들이 있다면 양해 바란다.

'Go'의 피처링에 참여한 Q-Tip은 2005년에 히트쳤던 곡 'Galvanize' 의 피처링을 맡았었다. 두곡의 완성도로만 봤을때 이 듀오와 Q-Tip의 궁합이 상당히 좋아보인다. 케미컬 브라더스의 톰 로랜즈는 Q 매거진과의 인터뷰에서 'Go'의 제작을 위해 Q-Tip의 집에 방문했던 것을 회상하며 "내가 뉴저지에 있는 그의집에 갔을때 정말 놀라왔다, 지하에 방 구석마다 특별한 Sub-bass 시스템이 설치된 환상적인 작업실이 있었고 무엇보다 놀라웠던건 잘알려지지 않은 크라우트락 비닐 컬렉션(주로 LP 앨범들을 의미한다.)이 있었다는 것이다. 난 경외감에 휩싸여 Q-Tip과 치킨을 시켜 먹었다"는 일화를 이야기 하기도 했다.
사실 'Go'가 포함된 앨범 Born in the Echoes는 평단에서 별로 좋은 평가를 받지 못했다. 장르의 거장들에겐 항상 신선하면서도 대중적인 호소력을 갖춘 곡들을 찍어내기를 기대하는데 어느면에서도 기대치에 못미친다는 평이다. 그러나 'Go'는 과거의 성공적인 요인들을 답습한다 한들 최소한 대중적인 호소력은 충분하다 못해 흘러 넘치고 있다. 사실 비전문가에겐 듣기 좋고 중독성 있으면 그만이지 않은가. 케미컬 브라더스 특유의 베이스 라인과 Q-Tip의 그루브한 보컬의 조합에 필자는 한동안 이곡을 미친듯이 들었던 기억이 있다.
실제 'Go' 는대중성의 척도라고 할수 있는 광고음악계에서 상당한 성공을 거두고 있으며 2016년 그래미 어워드에서는 '베스트 댄스 뮤직 레코딩' 후보에 오르기도 했다.
인간 기관차를 테마로 하여 여인들이 리듬에 맞춰 다양한 동작을 취하는 이 뮤직비디오의 감독은 무려 영화 '이터널 선샤인'의 감독 미셸 공드리이다. 미셸 공드리는 케미컬 브라더스의 또 다른 곡 'Star Guitar', 'Let Forever Be'의 뮤직비디오 역시 촬영한바 있는데 ‘Go’ 의 작업을 위해 케미컬 브라더스와의 만남후 "Juddering robotic funk"를 표현하기위해 노력했다고 한다. 우리말로 하면 '요동치는 로봇 펑크' 정도 인데 필자는 그냥 느낌만 받겠다.
